Did you know that Jacksonville celebrated its Bicentennial in 2022? Once known as Cowford, Jacksonville was founded in June 1822 as a port of entry for the US Territory of Florida.

We are pleased to have Alan Bliss, PhD and Executive Director of the Jacksonville Historical Society, as the presenter for our February program. Dr. Bliss will tell us about Jacksonville’s colorful history and the Jacksonville Bicentennial.

Dr. Bliss holds a Ph.D. from the University of Florida and is a professor at the University of North Florida. His popular US history courses include urban and maritime history, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and the New Deal. He offers an annual seminar on public history, emphasizing Jacksonville and consults on historic resources.

Before returning to higher education, Dr. Bliss had a successful career in real estate. He has worked as a commercial mariner, is an experienced offshore sailor, and enjoys boating on the St. Johns River and surrounding waters.
