Home & Garden Club -Jax Art and Architecture Walking Tour/Lunch

November 10, 2020 - 9:00 am - 1:30 pm

Downtown Jax Art and Architecture Walking Tour/Lunch

Many of you may know that Jacksonville had a major fire in1901, which resulted in a rebuilding boom of the major downtown landmark buildings we see today.  But you probably don’t know that a secret tunnel exists underneath many of these buildings!  In the early 1900s, like today, Jacksonville was a major banking center, and the newly built bank buildings were connected by a network of bank vaults and tunnels to move cash and other financial documents back and forth among the financial institutions.

For our next Home and Garden Club meeting, on Tuesday, November 10, we will take a walking tour to explore the secret tunnels and admire the great architectural details of the bank buildings. The tour is led by Gary Sass, a local icon of Jacksonville history, and includes many fascinating details about the visionary business leaders and architects that created the beginnings of modern Jacksonville. After the tour, we’ll dine at Bellwether, a modern farm-to-table restaurant. The cost of the tour plus lunch is $40.00 /person, payable by check to the Home and Garden Club on the day of the tour.

For the tour, we will meet at the Deercreek Pool parking lot at 9:00 am to carpool downtown.
The tour starts at 10:00 am and takes about 1.5 hours; be sure to wear comfortable shoes!

All Home & Garden Club members and first-time guests are invited to the tour and lunch. Please mark your calendar for November 10 and RSVP to deercreekhgc@gmail.com to confirm your attendance.

As a reminder, masks are required in public spaces unless eating.
