Jacksonville Humane Society

Founded in 1885, the Jacksonville Humane Society is Jacksonville’s second oldest non-profit funded by philanthropic contributions. In April 2007, the shelter was destroyed and 86 animals succumbed to a devastating fire. They had their Grand Opening of the new “JHS Adoption, Education and Community Resource Center” in November 2017 which is spectacular.

The Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) is a 501c3 non-profit, no-kill animal shelter and does not euthanize healthy or treatable companion animals in their care. They work in partnership with our city’s municipal animal control division, Animal Care and Protective Services, to maintain a saving rate of 90% or higher for our entire community, making Jacksonville a no-kill city. JHS is also actively involved in the movement to make Florida a no-kill state. If you are looking for a new best “furry” friend, JHS is located at 8464 Beach Blvd.

Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 12 pm – 7 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm.

All animals adopted at JHS are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm tested – all covered by the adoption fee. Adoption fees vary, but many dogs’ adoption fees are sponsored. Further information can be found at Jacksonville Humane Society.

Pace Center for Girls is a Florida-based, nationally recognized not-for-profit organization that provides non-residential, prevention, intervention and diversion services for girls and young women of middle and high school age. Pace provides free year-round schooling in academics, case management, counseling and life skills development in a trauma and gender free environment.

The DWA supports Pace at their Mrs. Mary’s Boutique. The Boutique, formally known as “The Clothes Closet”, was started by now 90-year-old Mary Warner. The Boutique provides a way for the girls to “buy” items with points they’ve earned through grades, good deeds, class attendance and participation. We support the Boutique with donations of clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, and toiletries.

Mrs. Mary’s Boutique has its own permanent room. It’s decorated and set up just like a boutique in the mall. This makes the girls feel very special and gives them an opportunity to shop in a place that otherwise they cannot afford.
