The Deercreek Home and Garden Club celebrated another stellar year as more than 50 members gathered May 20 at the lovely home of Linda and Alan Orr on Ashworth Court. With the theme “Sip, Sip Hooray,” the Orrs provided a balloon-covered photo background, welcoming banners and karaoke, along with grilled ribs, wings and an impressive charcuterie display. In addition, members brought their own special dishes and beverages to delight any palate!
With its 100 members, the HGC is dedicated to “enhancing home and community” through a variety of service events, seminars and fundraising efforts to improve the Deercreek neighborhood and foster relationships among its residents.
This year the club partnered with the Deercreek Women’s Alliance, Deercreek Country Club and HOA to offer back-to-school, harvest and luminary night celebrations for families; provided informative seminars on floral design, arts, tablescapes, herb gardening and palm tree care; and hosted a tour of St. Augustine homes during the holidays, a trip to the Mussallem Art Gallery and a performance of a noted woman in history, Julia Child.
The annual Spring Fashion Show and Raffle continued to be the club’s primary fundraising activity. Not only is it a fun time for the ladies in the community, this and other efforts—including a 50-50 draw–supported the maintenance of beautiful scenic gardens, urns and benches throughout the neighborhood, sparkling holiday lights at the entrance and other community-focused projects throughout the year.
A highlight this year is the HGC’s collaboration with the HOA to create a scenic view for our community on Deercreek Club Drive, near the pool. The formerly barren site has been transformed to a beautiful piece of land overlooking the lake, offering a majestic spot to watch the sunset each evening. Gregg Flynn, HOA chairman of the common property committee, spearheaded the project. Our HGC members Jill Cole—a member of the HOA committee, and Lorraine Clancy championed the effort, which was underwritten in part by a HGC contribution. Lorraine is responsible for maintaining the beautiful flowers in many of the public areas enjoyed by the community residents.
HGC members elected a slate of officers for the 2025-2026 year: Barbara Denman, president; Cary Flynn, vice president, Janet Deachsel, secretary; and Heidi Morrow, treasurer.
In May, the HCG sponsored a luncheon in appreciation of the staff of Connor Landscaping and the DCC golf course who work tirelessly to create and maintain Deercreek’s enviable, pristine grounds. Members Marcia Rose and Debi Gifford serve as committee chairpersons for this event.
In another highlight of this year, member Sharon Juhasz and Kendahl Mills, DCC membership director, developed a new system to welcome new residents to enhance community relations.
A HGC membership kick off meeting for the year 2025-2026 is planned for Wednesday, Aug. 20 at the Deercreek Country Club. For more information on attending this event, or how to become a member of this thriving organization, contact membership director Julie Howell at [email protected]
