At the October Home & Garden Club meeting, designers from Ballard Designs demonstrated how easy seasonal touches can incorporate fall colors into a typical home décor. Designers Christine Cunningham and Amanda Yonkers, began by noting that the cooler tones of a coastal vibe—a favorite design style of many Jacksonville homeowners—will work well with the warmer tones of browns, sages, purples and rusts used during the autumn months. “Your pumpkins do not need to go away,” said Christine. “These colors can be friends.”
To illustrate their points, the speakers brought an array of rugs, fabric samples, plants, vases and pumpkins (blue chinoiserie and tortoise shell). They showed how to layer to blend textures and fall hues. And as fall moves into winter, the same colors can transition throughout the holiday months, as updated color combinations can be accomplished with the switch of rugs, pillows and accessories.
The designers urged the group to build a room around a rug with autumn tones and add other colors to enhance the warmth of the rug. A rug is “a game changer,” they explained. The duo also said the minimalist design trend popular during the past few years is outdated and has been replaced by the maximalist look “more is better”.
Other observations from the Ballard decorators included:
- Embrace “what works for you.”
- Use animal prints which never go out of style.
- Update lighting, adding there is no thing as “too big of a chandelier.”
- White-and cream-colored window treatments set a perfect backdrop for any design.
- Keep expensive decor items, even if you tire of them. Moving such treasurers out of a room for a time will give new perspectives on ways to incorporate in the future.
After the presentation, a drawing was held to win a set of seasonal colored candles.
The HGC monthly meeting drew nearly 40 members and guests.
HGC members also welcomed “Comfort N Quilters,” a Deercreek group that sews quilts they donate to area children’s hospitals and other charitable organizations. Purchases of the handmade pieces by HGC club members help underwrite cost of materials for future sewing needs. The HCG also presented a $300 check to be used for additional materials.
