The Deercreek Women’s
Alliance
has been an active organization in Deercreek since 1999.
The
Alliance’s
primary function is to promote an awareness of the needs
of local charitable organizations and to raise funds for
these charities through a variety of activities and
social events--and to have a great time while doing it.
The
Alliance
is open to any Deercreek or Edgewater resident or
Deercreek Club member.
The
Alliance
is proud of the donations made in the past, totally
about $300,000.
But there is more to be done and we are always
looking for new areas where we can help make a
difference.
These are the charities the Community Connections
Committee has selected for the 2011-2012 year and the
name of the chairperson:
·
Wolfson Children’s Hospital
A community-wide
Diaper Drive
for Wolfson Children’s Hospital is held in April, plus a
$1000 donation to purchase diapers and equipment.

·
NE Florida
Community Hospice Thrift Shop

volunteers work in the Thrift Shop regularly on
Wednesdays and the Hospice truck comes into Deercreek
monthly to pick up large items for the shop.

Books-a-Go-Go
Books are collected and distributed to children
in low income families.
A $2500 donation will be used to purchase new
books for children during the year. We will also sponsor
a community-wide book drive in September.

·
Touchstone
Village
Touchstone
Village
is a new residential facility and program connected with
the
Youth
Crisis Center
that supports at-risk and disconnected youths and young
adults who age out of the foster care system.
We have donated furnishings and decorations for
the apartments plus $1000 to cover special projects and
Christmas gifts. Books a-Go-Go also helps stock their
library and John Tomka repairs bikes that the sheriff’s
department supplies.

·
The Bag Ladies
A $500 donation will be used to purchase supplies and
material for bags that are filled with snacks,
toiletries, games, pillow and stuffed toys to help
comfort the children when they arrive at Hubbard House,
sometimes fleeing an abusive home with nothing.
They also receive books from Books-a-Go-Go.

·
Hubbard House
Besides a $1000 donation, we will have a food drive in
May to fill their pantry, since there is a constant flow
of families coming and going.
We will also be having a toy and gift drive in
November to fill the Holiday Gift Cupboard at Hubbard
House so that the mothers and children can give each
other gifts during the holidays.

·
WJCT Radio Reading Service
This is a closed-circuit radio station that broadcasts
the news to people who are blind or visually impaired.
We will be helping them buy the radio receivers
needed to hear the programs.

The Senior Life Foundation Inc
This Foundation is made up of caring people who have
identified the problems of in-need seniors in
Duval
County:
low income, inadequate services, poor health, limited
mobility, etc.
They try to meet the emergency needs of these
seniors. We
are donating $1500 to help them.

The Women’s
Alliance
meets at the Club every other month all year long.
The meetings are held in the evening to
accommodate women working outside the home.
The evening starts at
6:15 PM
with a social time.
Dinner is at 7
PM.
There is usually a guest speaker and some entertaining
activity to conclude the evening. This year a round of
Family Feud is already on the schedule and we also plan
to do a BBQ Night in July when husbands join us for the
evening. Please
join us for an evening to see what the
Alliance
is all about.
We also host fundraising projects during the year
to support our charities:
a community-wide Spring Cleaning Yard Sale in
April, a Fashion Show in November and we’re hoping to do
a Casino Night for New Year’s Eve this year.
There is always something going on and we hope
you can find a place to plug in.
If you have any questions, be sure to contact our
Membership Chairs Adele Kunzweiler 464-0647,
or Cary Flynn
619-4580.
Dues are $20 for the year, starting in March.
