Literary Circle May 2016
In May we will be reading an interesting novel called Delicious by Ruth Reichl. Ms. Reichl was Editor in chief of Gourmet magazine for 10 years. She is a born storyteller and now with this magical debut novel, she has created a sumptuous realized world that will enchant you.
In the novel Billie Breslin has traveled far from her home in California to take a job at Delicious, New York’s most iconic food magazine. Away from her family, Billie initially feels like a fish out of water, until she is welcomed by the magazine’s colorful staff. She is also seduced by the downtown food scene, especially the famous Italian food shop where she works on weekends. Then Delicious is abruptly shut down, but she agrees to stay on in an empty office, maintaining a hotline for reader complaints in order to pay her bills.
To Billie’s surprise the lonely job becomes a portal to a miraculous discovery. In a hidden room, Billie finds a cache of letters written during WWII by Lulu Swain, a plucky 12 year old to legendary chef, James Beard.
