Literary Circle July 2018

On July 16, at 10:00 the Deercreek Literary Circle will meet at the home of Cary Flynn to discuss Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate.

Summary:

Two families generations apart, are forever changed by heartbreaking injustice in this poignant novel, inspired by a true story.

Memphis, 1939. Twelve year old Rill Foss and her 4 younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shanty boat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge-until strangers arrive and the children are thrown into the Children’s Home Society orphanage. The Foss children are assured they will soon be returned to their parents-but quickly realizes the truth is much darker.

Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stanford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. When Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, she takes a journey through her family’s long hidden history.

Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals, in which the director of a Memphis based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country.

The Deercreek Literary Circle meets every 3rd Monday at 10:00 in the homes of participants.
