Spotlight on Charity: The RITA Foundation
The RITA (Research Is The Answer) Foundation was started in 1997 to help raise funds for breast cancer research and programs in the Jacksonville area. To date, the foundation has donated over $4,450,000. It grew from its humble beginnings of one fund raiser event by Chuck and Nancy Jantz, to several different events ranging from Tennis tournaments, Black tie gala, 5K runs and a Golf tournament.
SenioRITAs at Sawgrass was developed in year 2000 under the RITA umbrella, catering to age appropriate tennis ladies called SenioRITAs, ages 40 and over. In October 2016, SenioRITA matches were held at the Sawgrass Country Club and it included a party with silent and live auctions. 100% of the proceeds from RITA events are donated to local cancer programs with emphasis on breast cancer.
The Mayo Clinic received $45,000 for Dr. Al Copland’s triple negative breast cancer research and $6,000 was added to our $100,000.00 Cancer Research Endowment. Baptist Foundation received $25,000 creating a new cancer endowment in honor of The Main Street America Group, and 25,000 creating a new cancer endowment in honor of Regency Centers, both long time Sponsors. These fully funded endowments will be matched dollar for dollar by the Baptist Foundation. In addition, two new endowments were partially funded with grants of $20,000 and $2,275 was added to the $200,000 SenioRITAs Cancer Endowment. Our main recipients, Mayo Clinic and Baptist Foundation have each received over $1,000,000.00 and UF Health (Shands) got over $1,500,000.00 to date. The RITA Foundation is an all-volunteer 501(3)(C) public non-profit corporation, registered with the US Government and the State of Florida.
Last year, the Deercreek Women’s Alliance supported both The RITA Championships and SenioRITAs at Sawgrass with a bronze level sponsorship as well as over twelve ladies playing in the weekend matches.
We are grateful to donate to this wonderful organization. Thank you to Nancy and Chuck for their continued fundraising efforts. To learn more about The RITA Foundation Inc., visit their website at www.the-rita-foundation.org
