Deercreek resident Earns Scholastic Awards

Deercreek resident and High School senior, Katie Hecht, recently earned 5 Gold Keys and Two Silver Keys for writing in the Scholastic Southeast Regional Art and Writing Awards. Her Gold Key pieces advanced to the national level in New York City, where she earned two Silver Medals (from approximately 329,000 submissions). The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, which was founded in 1923, is the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12. Some of the renowned alumni include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Sylvia Plath, Stephen King, Zac Posen, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, John Lithgow and many more.

Katie is passionate about promoting literacy and feels strongly that every child should own a book of their very own. In 2013, she founded a global initiative called “Words On Wings” to help promote literacy to children in need. Her program has provided books to children living in orphanages and low-income areas in Jamaica, Mexico, Peru and right here in Jacksonville. In recognition of her work, Katie was recently awarded the “Hands On Jacksonville Literacy Award,” which is presented to an exceptional volunteer who has made significant progress in the promotion of literacy through volunteer action.

Way to go, Katie!
