Bragging Rights Well Deserved!!
Deercreek’s very own USTA Women’s 55 and older 6.0 tennis team went all the way to the finals of the National Championships in Orlando, FL on October 27 – 29, 2017 to clinch the second-place trophy. Quite an accomplishment considering they had to defeat top teams from across the nation for this coveted title.
Our team includes: Barb Smith (the fearless Captain), Donna Bernard, Janet Daechsel, Bonnie King, Karen Sayre, Michele Abner, Nancy Blacker and Judy Peace. Also on the team though not at Nationals are Marie Malloy and Pamela Ernst. Deercreek Tennis Director Kris Gouin was there to cheer them along with two unofficial “cheerleaders” (husband Gary Smith and brother John McNicol).
After competing locally this past winter and finishing in first place, the team advanced to the Florida Sectional Championship in May where they won first place, leading to the opportunity to compete for the National Championship title in October. It is a huge honor and achievement to compete at this level AND reach the finals. They were SO CLOSE to actually winning the entire championship.
Another Deercreek resident Carol Whitmire plays on the Women’s 55 and older 8.0 team for Southside and their team captured the National Championship title in their division!! So our Deercreek tennis ladies have something to brag about. Next time you see any of these ladies, give them a shout out and congrats, – it is well deserved!!!
The championships were held at the innovative new USTA National Campus in Orlando. With 100 courts and well thought out amenities, the facility and staff create an exceptional experience for players and spectators. Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 players in a few parts of the country in its first year to more than 900,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
